Be in Practice with Yourself

Facilitate better living off and on the mat with practices to open your body and mind.

Practice to Become More of Who You Are

When was the last time you took a moment of pause? To slow down, turn inward, and truly listen—to your breath, your heart, your innermost self. To take the rare opportunity to put down the walls of the boxes the world has put you in and just be who you are right now.

This is your moment.

At Canmore Hot Yoga, we have one goal—to help you reconnect to your true nature. This is a space where you’re encouraged to show up just as you are and move from thinking to feeling.

Our classes, from foundational hot yoga to inferno HIIT Pilates, will give you all the physical benefits of an asana practice, putting space between your muscle fibres and your joints. But they will also help give you space. Space to rethink your doubts and beliefs. To let go of the idea of perfection and give yourself permission to show up in the postures differently every day. To soften as much as you engage (in practice, and in life).

Nourish and Flourish—That’s What It’s All About

The way we’re conditioned to be in practice with ourselves isn’t in keeping with our true nature. In a world of constant stimulation, overwhelm and rush, you’re not often given the opportunity to tune into what your body (and, more importantly, your nervous system) needs.

That’s exactly what your yoga practice provides.

Think of our classes as a translator between you and your body. Here you’ll learn how to use movement, stretching and breathwork as a guide, adapting the poses to work for you and embracing the opportunity to learn how your body has changed day-to-day, month-to-month. All alongside a community of like-minded individuals committed to health, growth, and having a little fun.

Hi, I’m Hilary…

Inquisitive learner, human design nerd, and owner of Canmore Hot Yoga.

To know me is to know that I love to ask questions. Inquisitive to a fault, one of my favourite words in the English language is “why.” The only problem is, I’m rarely satisfied by the answers I receive. Each one sends me down a rabbit hole—as if I finally reach the tip of the iceberg only to realize how much more lies beneath the surface.

Naturally, I was looking for answers when I found yoga. Like many, I turned to this practice to find relief from an injury. But I was also feeling a lot of anxiety and confusion about life. Nothing seemed to fit my search for “more”—until I stepped on the mat.

The more I practiced, the more I started to feel the answers. It was as if the physical practice allowed me to suspend my disbelief long enough to stop asking existential questions like “who am I” and instead connect to my true nature.

Ironically, yoga has only made me more curious. This practice has given me the inspiration to study and learn more about human anatomy and physiology, the nervous system, belief systems and even human design. The more you know, the more you realize how much there is to learn and question. It’s endless.

Inspired by our incredible surroundings, I opened Canmore Hot Yoga in 2012 with the intention of helping people connect to their true nature through movement, mindset, and community. Whether you’ve been with us for years or you’re new to our studio, know that this space exists for you to create a practice that nourishes you—whatever that may look like

I’m a big believer that the only thing constant in life is change. But we get to choose to meet change where it’s at. Even in a room where everybody is taking the same class, the inward journey is entirely unique. No matter what you take from our classes, I hope you find the inspiration to ask questions—about yourself, your body, and the world around you.

All heart,

Hilary and the Canmore Hot Yoga Family

FAQs

  • Every class is suitable for all ages and levels of health, fitness, and athleticism. There is a lot of progression within each posture, which allows beginners and advanced students to practice together at their own pace. First, you’ll learn the form/alignment and, once you’re comfortable, you can explore new depths within your body. Remember, yoga isn’t about fitting your body to the pose. It’s about fitting the pose to your body.

  • Please arrive 15-20 minutes prior to your first class to fill out the registration forms and get comfortable in the studio. We recommend practicing on an empty stomach or refraining from eating anything heavy 2-3 hours before class. Also, make sure you have been drinking water all day and the day before class to ensure you are well-hydrated! Be prepared to sweat and feel great.

    What to bring:

    • Water bottle
    • Yoga Mat
    • Towels (One for your mat and one if you wish to shower)

Please note: Towel and mat rentals are available for $2 per visit.

  • Yoga helps to build strength and flexibility in the body and mind. If you practice regularly, at least three times per week, you can expect to see and feel the reshaping of your body. Physically, you may lose weight, gain muscle tone, and improve strength and balance. Mentally, you will notice an improvement in concentration skills and a reduction in stress. Most importantly, you’ll become more aware of your breath, which ultimately helps to relax and calm the body and mind.

  • Saying you are not flexible enough for yoga is like saying you are too dirty to take a bath! This is the most common misconception that prevents people from coming to a yoga class. Yoga is not about how flexible you are, but about strengthening your body and spine in all directions, gradually improving your flexibility. Through a consistent yoga practice, your flexibility will improve, but it is not necessary to be flexible before coming to class.

We encourage all new yogis to come back for their second class as soon as possible, especially if you find you are a bit sore the next day. It is normal to experience stiffness and sore muscles as you are awakening and conditioning them through your practice. It’s also totally normal to experience a slight headache after your first class because of the detoxification process occurring in your body.

“Sweat is an ancient form of self healing, it burns karma, purifying body and soul. Sweat is holy water, prayer beads, pearls of liquid that release our past, anointing all your parts in a baptism by fire.”
